Lovage

Lovage was an experimental electronic trio formed in 1997 with Dan the Automator, Mike Patton, and Kid Koala. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1998, mixing electronica, hip-hop, and jazz into something that felt both cohesive and slightly off-kilter. A track like "Stroker Ace" from that record shows what they were doing, atmospheric production with Patton's vocal shifts floating over the top.

Their second album, "Music to Make Cars Crash To," arrived in 2001 and leaned further into experimental territory. It included work with Jennifer Charles, Norah Jones, and DJ Shadow, though the sound remained rooted in that same blend of electronic textures and live instrumentation. The group had a cult following, but they never became a permanent fixture, more a side project where three distinct voices could overlap for a few records.
