Lowrider formed in East Los Angeles in the late 1960s, with Steve Salas on vocals and guitar. Their sound pulled from soul, funk, and traditional Mexican music. The band's 1987 album 'As One' included the track 'All In Hand,' which became their most recognizable song.
Their lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being politically charged, addressing issues like poverty and the Chicano experience. This didn't stop them from releasing several albums through the late '80s and '90s, including 'Lowrider' in 1988 and 'Shades of Blue' in 1990.
Other songs like 'Bebad' and 'Lonely Soul' show the range in their catalog, from soulful ballads to funkier grooves. The original lineup featured Rod Roddy on drums, Raymond Rodriguez on bass, and Arturo Ortiz on keyboards.
