Lubya Assunção was born in 1949 and came up in Salvador, Bahia, where Afro-Brazilian traditions and the Tropicália movement shaped her sound. In 1976, she formed a band with her brother Assis, guitarist Dadi, bassist Félix, and drummer Davi, mixing Brazilian styles with jazz, rock, and blues. Her song 'Me Espera' is part of that early output.
She kept recording through that period, putting out eight studio albums between 1978 and 1992, including 'Certas Canções' and 'Negro Amor'.
