Luciano Rodrigues

Luciano Rodrigues came from Minas Gerais in Brazil, where he grew up hearing sertanejo music. He started singing at local festivals, and the poetry of Mário de Andrade influenced how he approached lyrics. In 1969, he put out his first album, 'O Canto de Um Poeta,' which included the song 'Estrela Marília.' That track became his most recognizable piece, with a melody that stuck with listeners and lyrics that felt personal rather than grandiose.

Rodrigues had an outspoken side that sometimes drew criticism, but he kept making music that leaned into emotional directness. He recorded several albums through the 1970s, like 'Livre' in 1975 and 'Sorriso de Menina' in 1977. His voice stayed unadorned, and the arrangements rarely crowded out the words.
