Tampoco a las doce ha venido a almorzar...
Y entonces el padre, con paso resuelto,
salió hacia la calle para irla a buscar.
Estando en la puerta llegó un mandadero
trayendo una carta. Pregunta por él.
La rasga temblando. Se va el mensajero.
Y lee unos renglones que saben a hiel.
Mechita se ha ido
y aquel que rondaba
la tierna paloma
como un gavilán,
el sueño dorado
del viejo robaba
y se lo llevaba...
Quién sabe do van...
Dos lágrimas grandes rodaron serenas.
Su angustia infinita no puede cambiar
y al claro de luna lloraba sus penas
sin otro consuelo que el de recordar.
Pasaron los días. Pasó una semana.
Mechita no ha vuelto ya más al hogar
y el viejo sentado junto a la ventana,
la espera creyendo que ha de retornar.
Después la encontraron...
La vieron en coche...
Salió tambaleando
de un gran cabaret,
y a la mortecina
luz de aquella noche
se vio su carita
color rosa té.
Otra vez la vieron pasear por Palermo
vestida con lujo, guiando un Renault,
y al lado un muchacho, con cara de enfermo,
de quien se decía fue su gigoló.
Un tiempo más tarde, por una vecina,
se supo cuál era la causa del mal
y es que envenenada por la cocaína
se estaba muriendo en un hospital.
Y mientras su vida
se va así apagando
y en vano la ciencia
pretende alargar,
el viejo en la iglesia,
se postra, rezando
rogándole al cielo
que la haga sanar.
