He was born in 1943 in Ubatuba, a coastal town, and his father was a guitarist who introduced him to Brazilian rhythms. His song 'Mais Bela Flor' came out in 1964 on his debut album 'O Barquinho' and became widely popular for its melody and lyrics.
Betinho worked with other Brazilian musicians including Chico Buarque, who wrote the lyrics for 'Mais Bela Flor'. He released albums like 'Cantando o Brasil' in 1972 and 'Poesia e Som' in 1975. During Brazil's military regime, some of his music faced censorship due to political themes, but he kept recording and performing.
