Luiz Alfredo Xavier was born in São João da Barra in 1946. He started playing music early, forming his first band, Os Diplomáticos, when he was fifteen. By the mid-1970s he had released his debut album, Semente do Futuro, and its title track became a hit in Brazil.
In 1977 he released Por Força do Hábito, which became his most enduring song. During Brazil's military regime, his music sometimes faced censorship for what authorities considered subversive themes.
