Luiz Carlos da Vila

Luiz Carlos da Vila was a singer and songwriter from Rio de Janeiro's Vila Isabel neighborhood. He started working in music in the mid-1960s, drawing from samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian folk traditions. His self-titled debut album came out in 1971, mixing samba with soul and funk.

In 1973, his second album 'Além da Razão' gave him his breakthrough. The title track became a classic Brazilian ballad, and other songs like 'Os Papéis' and 'Kizomba, a Festa da Raça' showed his range. He kept recording through the 1970s and early 1980s with albums like 'Santa Clara' and 'Mosaico', sometimes bringing in jazz and reggae elements.

His lyrics often touched on social themes, which sometimes drew criticism. But he kept writing plainly about love and daily life too, as in 'Por Um Dia De Graça' and 'O Show Tem que Continuar'. He worked steadily until his death in 2008, leaving behind a catalog that feels specific to his neighborhood and his moment.
