Luiz Carlos Magno

Luiz Carlos Magno came up in Cabo Frio, a coastal town in Brazil. He sang in the local church choir as a kid, and by the late 1960s he'd formed a group called Os Magnos that found some regional popularity.

In 1970, he released the album 'Asas de Um Sonho,' which included the song 'Ave Maria Pro Nosso Amor.' That track became a national hit, crossing over from church services to more general listening. It's still the song most people know him by, along with others like 'Não Te Desamparo' and 'Meu Castigo.'

His career had its rough patches, including some public struggles and a serious car accident in 1994. He kept recording, though, and his music, especially those early hits, maintained a straightforward, devotional quality that resonated with a lot of listeners.
