Luiz Henrique and Carlos Rossi formed their duo in the early 1980s, with Luiz Henrique on vocals and guitar and Carlos Rossi on accordion. They came together through a shared interest in traditional Brazilian music and the stories of people living in the sertão, the rural backcountry.
Their song "Tropas e Boiadas" became particularly well-known, capturing something about life in that landscape. They released several albums in the 1980s and 1990s, including "Terra Vermelha" in 1986 and "Som de Viola" in 1989.
The duo spent a lot of time touring through Brazil's interior, playing for audiences who lived the kind of rural life their music often described. Some of their lyrics drew criticism for being nostalgic, but they kept at it, building a following among sertanejos over those years.
