Luiz Leder was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1945. He grew up hearing samba and bossa nova around the city, along with international pop music that was coming through at the time. His song 'Arco-Íris' came out in 1974 and became a kind of anthem in Brazil.
During the 1960s, when Brazil was under military rule, some of Leder's music was censored. He kept writing anyway. A few years later, he made an album called 'Submarino Verde' that leaned into psychedelic rock. It got mixed reactions from critics, with some saying it was more about being flashy than about the music itself.
He recorded with musicians like Marco Aurélio on bass and Fábio Moreira. Other songs of his include 'Fechar os Olhos' and 'Sobre os Velhos Trilhos da Cidade'.
