Luiz Rocha came up in Salvador, Bahia, where he grew up hearing the rhythms of Afro-Brazilian music. He started out in the 1990s with a band called Terra Samba before going solo. His first album, 'Pressa,' came out in 2007 and gave him a hit with the title track.
His songs like 'Antes de Você Dormir' and 'Calma' have a straightforward, melodic quality that feels grounded in MPB and samba. He put out a few more albums after that, including 'Mar de Emoções' in 2009 and 'Samba e Suor' in 2012.
In 2012, he spoke publicly about violence and corruption in his hometown, which drew some attention. He works with a band that includes Thiago Almeida on guitar and Julio Cesar on bass.
