Luizinho e A Tribo formed in Salvador, Bahia in the late 1980s. The band was led by Luizinho, born Luiz Carlos dos Santos, who grew up hearing traditional Bahian music before discovering reggae as a teenager. He gathered a collective of musicians who shared his interest in the genre.
Their 1992 album "Kaya na Gandaia" brought them wider attention. The title track became a hit with its reggae rhythm and lyrics about a relaxed way of living. They toured Brazil after that release, playing energetic shows for various audiences.
Luizinho e A Tribo recorded several other albums including "Jah Reggae" in 1994, "Mandala Reggae" in 1998, and "Tribo do Bem" in 2004. Their songs often touched on social themes alongside more personal subjects. In 1995, Luizinho was diagnosed with throat cancer, which interrupted their touring, but he returned to music a couple years later.
