Luizinho Neves

Luizinho Neves came up in Salvador, Bahia, where he grew up hearing samba, capoeira, and the music of Candomblé. Those sounds stuck with him, and by the early 1990s he had put out his first album, 'Maré Cheia.'

Around that time he wrote 'Nossa Senhora, da nossa terra, do nosso chão,' a song that drew some attention for how it connected the Virgin Mary with the African goddess Iemanjá. It wasn't meant as a provocation, just a reflection of how those traditions overlap where he's from. He kept writing about faith and place, with songs like 'Amor Selvagem' and 'Baile da Siriema' built on percussion and melody that felt both familiar and his own.

His music doesn't really separate the spiritual from the everyday. The rhythms are Brazilian, the themes are straightforward, love, hope, the small struggles, and the delivery is direct. He's been doing it long enough that the sound just feels lived-in, like something you'd hear at a neighborhood gathering rather than on a stage.
