Lula Galvão was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1956. He came up listening to samba, bossa nova, and jazz, and those sounds stuck with him.
In the early 1980s, he put together a band and started playing what people called Samba Novo. It was samba with jazz harmonies and more complicated arrangements than the traditional stuff. Some listeners thought it was too much, but Galvão kept at it.
He put out records like the self-titled 'Lula Galvão' in 1986 and 'Samba Novo' in 1988. There was also 'Nosso Tempo' in 1990 and a live album from Rio in 1992.
