Background notes

Archive material and source history

Lunch was an alternative rock band from Manchester that formed in 1981. They were led by vocalist and songwriter Mark Burgess, with early members including bassist Paul Cook, guitarist Robert Pursey, and drummer Nick Sanderson. Their music came out of the post-punk scene, mixing punk energy with more experimental sounds.

Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1982 and included the single 'I Don't Need You.' That song became something of an anthem for listeners who felt disconnected or disillusioned. The band followed up with albums like 'Creeps' in 1984 and 'The World of Lunch' in 1985, maintaining a steady output through the decade.

Lunch's lyrics often dealt with darker themes, alienation, mental strain, personal struggles, which sometimes put them at odds with more conservative critics. Burgess had a confrontational style on stage, and the band's sound stayed raw and introspective. They kept recording through the late '80s, putting out records like 'Hotel Nirvana' in 1987 and 'Skinned Alive' in 1988.
