Luniz

Luniz came out of Oakland in the early 1990s, a duo made up of Yukmouth and Numskull. They signed with Mo' Money Records and put out their first album, 'Operation Stackola,' in 1994. The track 'I Got 5 On It' from that record caught on, hitting the Billboard charts and becoming a West Coast staple.

Their sound had that G-funk feel, laid-back tempos, soulful samples, and lyrics that reflected where they were from. Beyond 'I Got 5 On It,' they had other songs like 'My Buddy' and 'Sad Millionaire' that kept with that Oakland perspective. They released several more albums through the 1990s and 2000s, including 'Lunitik Muzik' and 'Silver & Black.'

For a lot of listeners, Luniz represented a specific Oakland vibe during that mid-90s era. The music wasn't overly complicated, just steady beats and straightforward rhymes about their surroundings. Even with later work, those early records, especially the one with 'I Got 5 On It,' are what people tend to remember.
