Lura was born Lurdes Maria de Barros Alsina Gomes in 1975 on the island of São Vicente in Cape Verde. She grew up listening to the traditional sounds of her country, particularly morna and coladera, and was influenced by singers like Cesária Évora and Bana.
Her debut album 'Di Alma' came out in 1996, and she followed it with records like 'M'bem di Fora' in 2006 and 'Nha Vida' in 2013. Songs like 'Na Ri Na' and 'Nha Vida' show her way with Cape Verdean rhythms and her clear, direct voice.
In 2017 there was some public discussion about her song 'Nha Terra' and questions of artistic borrowing, though the details of that episode are less clear now. Her most recent album is 'Herança' from 2020.
