Luster formed in Los Angeles in the late 1990s around singer-songwriter Jennifer Charles and guitarist Shelby Lynne. Their self-titled debut album came out in 2000, but it was their 2004 record 'Curiosity Killed the Cat' that brought them wider attention.
That album included 'You've Got the Heat,' a sparse ballad with Charles's vocals floating over minimal instrumentation. The song became their most recognizable track, though they also recorded a cover of Darkthrone's 'Transilvanian Hunger.'
Charles's lyrics and the band's overall approach sometimes drew criticism for being too dark or introspective.
