Luther Vandross was born in New York City in 1951. He started out singing with the group Change, which had a hit with 'The Glow of Love' in 1980. His first solo album, 'Never Too Much,' came out in 1981 and established him as a major R&B voice.
His singing had a particular warmth and control that made ballads like 'A House Is Not a Home' and 'The Closer I Get to You' feel both polished and deeply personal. He kept recording through the 1980s and 1990s, with albums like 'Busy Body' and 'The Night I Fell in Love'.
Vandross died in 2005.
