Archive material and source history

Lyn Collins sang with James Brown's band in the late 1960s, adding her voice to tracks like 'Sex Machine' and 'Cold Sweat.' She was part of the musical Collins family, which included her brother Bootsy. In 1972, she released her solo debut 'Think (About It),' with the title track written by Bootsy. That song, along with 'Do Your Thing' and 'Take Me Just As I Am,' became her best-known work.

Her music often carried themes of empowerment and social consciousness, delivered with a powerful vocal style that stood out in the funk and soul scene. She worked with musicians from Brown's circle, including Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley. Collins continued recording through the 1970s with albums like 'Me and My Music' and 'Check Me Out If You Don't Know Me.'

She passed away in 2006. Her recordings, particularly 'Think (About It),' have been sampled and referenced by various artists in later decades.
