The band Lynyrd Skynyrd formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964, with Ronnie Van Zant on vocals, guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington, bassist Leon Wilkeson, and drummer Bob Burns. They took their name from a local gym teacher who punished students for having long hair. Their 1973 debut album included songs like "Free Bird" and "Gimme Three Steps."
On October 20, 1977, a charter plane carrying the band crashed in Mississippi, killing Van Zant, Collins, Wilkeson, and five others from the band and crew. Rossington was the only surviving original member. The group's music, including the Spanish-language version of "Simple Man," has continued to be heard long after that day.
