Lynyrd Skynyrd formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The original lineup included Ronnie Van Zant on vocals, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins on guitars, Larry Junstrom on bass, and Bob Burns on drums. Their debut album, "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)," came out in 1973 and helped establish their sound, which blended blues and rock with songs like "Gimme Three Steps" and "Saturday Night Special."
In 1977, the band was touring to support their "Street Survivors" album when their chartered plane crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi. The crash killed Van Zant, Collins, and several others, effectively ending that version of the band. The surviving members disbanded for a time.
In 1987, Rossington and Junstrom reunited with new members, including Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie's brother, taking over vocals. This lineup continued to tour and record albums like "Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991" and "God & Guns." Songs such as "That Smell" and "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew" remained part of their setlists.
