M was a British electronic project led by Robin Scott in the late 1970s. Their 1979 single 'Pop Muzik' became an international hit, built around a simple synthesizer hook and a deadpan vocal delivery that felt both futuristic and knowingly commercial. The track's success came quickly, reaching number one in multiple countries including the US and UK.

Scott had worked with musicians like Martin Ware and Gareth Sager, who had been part of the post-punk group The Future. The name M reportedly came from the first letters of the members' names. After 'Pop Muzik,' they released albums like 'New York-London-Paris-Munich' and 'The Official Secrets Act,' but never matched that initial chart impact. Another track, 'Eard It,' appeared on later compilations.

Their sound was built on synthesizers and drum machines at a time when such gear was still novel in pop music. The straightforward, repetitive nature of 'Pop Muzik' drew some criticism for being too simple, but its minimal electronic pulse clearly pointed toward directions other artists would explore more fully in the 1980s.
