M-80 formed in Atlanta in the late 1980s with Craig Bonnell on vocals and guitar, Jess Pillmore on bass and vocals, and Dave Grohl on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1989, and the single "Radio Station" got heavy play on college and rock stations. The band had a rough, energetic sound that fit with what was happening in rock at the time.

Grohl left in 1990 to join Nirvana, and the band cycled through drummers including Chris Ballew and later Scott McCaughey. They kept recording, putting out albums like "Dead Buzz" in 1991 and "Dog on Fire" in 1993. Songs like "Call Waiting" and "Letdown" showed their mix of melody and raw guitar work.

M-80 released their final studio album, "Slip," in 1997. They were never a huge commercial act, but their records found an audience that responded to the directness in tracks like "Fight You For No Reason" and "Common Foe."
