M Guinho VP is a Brazilian funk carioca group from Rio de Janeiro that formed in the late 1990s. The group is led by vocalists Guinho and VP, with backing from members like Digão on percussion and DJ duties, Celsinho on guitar, and Marcio on bass. Their sound developed in the city's neighborhoods, drawing on traditional funk carioca beats with raw, energetic delivery.
Their 2001 album 'Eu Me Imagino' gave them a breakthrough with its title track, which became popular in Rio's favelas. They followed with live recordings like 2005's 'Ao Vivo no Morro,' captured in a favela setting, and later albums that sometimes addressed social themes, such as 2010's 'Respeita a Vida.'
Over time, their lyrics, often explicit and dealing with social issues, drew criticism from conservative groups. The band members also faced personal difficulties, including struggles with drug addiction and financial instability. Despite these challenges, Guinho and VP kept making music, maintaining a core lineup through much of their career.
They released 'Quintal do Meu Avô' in 2016, an album that returned to traditional funk carioca sounds with lyrics about childhood and community. Their work helped bring funk carioca to wider attention in Brazil, influencing other artists in the genre.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
