Maanam formed in the late 1970s around guitarist Marek Jackowski and vocalist Kora (Olga Jackowska). Their sound didn't fit neatly into the Polish rock scene of that time, and Kora's lyrics sometimes ran into trouble with authorities.
Their 1981 album 'O!' brought them wider attention, especially the song 'Cykady Na Cykladach.' That track, with its Mediterranean feel and melancholic pull, became something of a standard. Other songs like 'Ładza Pieniądza' and 'Agresywne Lato' also found their audience. The band kept recording through the 1980s and into the 1990s, with albums like 'Nocny Patrol' and 'Derwisze.'
Bassist Bogdan Kowalewski and drummer Ryszard Olesiński were part of the group for much of that time. Their music pulled from different places, some folk touches, some rock drive, but it always felt like their own thing. 'Cykady Na Cykladach' is still the song people know, a piece of Polish music that stuck around.
