Mabanua formed in 2002 with musicians from Ayacucho in the Peruvian Andes. The group included Abelardo "El Chango" Zegarra on vocals and guitar, Gianfranco "El Lechón" Barrueto on charango, Alfonso "El Alfa" Caballero on percussion, and Atahualpa "El Apache" Canales playing quena and zampoña.
Their debut album in 2002 featured "El Canto Del Colibrí," a song that became one of their better-known pieces. They followed with several more albums over the next decade, including Cántaro de Barro in 2004 and Apu Inca Atawallpa in 2006.
Some listeners appreciated how they mixed traditional Andean sounds with contemporary arrangements, while others felt it strayed too far from older styles. Their lyrics sometimes addressed social themes like poverty and indigenous culture.
By the early 2010s, they had released El Viaje, and their music had found listeners both in Peru and elsewhere, influencing some younger musicians working with Andean traditions.
