Editor's note

Mac Davis, the Texas songwriter who wrote for Elvis

A Lubbock-born writer who penned hits for himself and the King.

For a quick sense of his style, try "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" and the later, wry "It's Hard To Be Humble." They show the range from smooth hitmaker to self-aware humor.

Elvis Presley recorded his song "A Little Less Conversation" in 1967, which alone would secure a place in music history. But Davis also wrote and sang his own early '70s hits like "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me," blending country charm with a pop sensibility. His work feels like a direct line from Nashville's writing rooms to the radio.

He started in local Texas bands and signed a Nashville songwriting deal in 1964. After Elvis cut his song, Davis began releasing his own records, with his biggest success coming in the early 1970s. Later, he acted in films and TV, and kept recording songs like "Oh Lord It's Hard To Be Humble."
