Macacos Me Mordam

Macacos Me Mordam formed in the late 1990s in Rio de Janeiro's Lapa neighborhood. The original lineup included Fred Ferreira on vocals, Marcelo Yuka on drums, Tico Santa Cruz on bass, and Jorge Mautner on guitar. Their name translates to 'Monkeys Bite Me,' which gives you a sense of their playful, slightly confrontational approach from the start.

Their music pulled from funk, rock, reggae, and Brazilian rhythms, creating an eclectic mix that didn't fit neatly into existing categories. Songs like 'Animais,' 'Bunda Mole,' and 'Cachaça' became fan favorites, with 'Animais' in particular sparking conversations about animal rights and human responsibility. They released five studio albums between 2000 and 2015, including their self-titled debut and 'O Último Macaco.'

On stage, they were known for wearing animal masks and costumes, creating surreal performances that matched their unconventional sound. Jorge Mautner left the band in 2003 and was replaced by Fernando Catatau, but Ferreira, Yuka, and Santa Cruz remained constant members throughout most of their run. Their music continues to find listeners who appreciate its particular blend of musical styles and thoughtful, sometimes provocative lyrics.
