Background notes

Archive material and source history

Machine Girls is an electronic duo from California formed in 2009 by Matt Stephenson and Ryan Sambol. They came out of San Francisco's DIY scene with early releases like 'Hunger Within A Hollow Sphere' in 2010 and 'Heavy Machinery' the following year. Their sound pulls from industrial noise and psychedelic trance, often with a melodic undercurrent.

They've put out seven albums, including 'Alpha' and 'Beta' in 2012, 'Gemini' in 2013, 'Eternal' in 2015, and 'Void' in 2018. Stephenson handles vocals, synthesizers, and drum programming while Sambol plays guitar and works with effects and synthesis. Their track 'Eu Aindo Gosto Dela' appears on the 'Void' album.

Some listeners find their approach too noisy or unstructured, but they've kept at it with the same core lineup. They're still making music that doesn't fit neatly into categories, working with the textures and unpredictability that have defined their recordings from the start.
