Madame Florinda formed in São Paulo in the late 1990s with four members: Simone Guimarães on lead vocals and guitar, Marcia Hafif on vocals and keyboards, Celina Guimarães on vocals and percussion, and Rodrigo Santos on bass and vocals. They released their self-titled debut album in 2000.
Their music drew from Brazilian traditions and MPB, with acoustic arrangements and layered vocals. Songs like "Palavras" and "Volta" show their approach to melody and lyrics. They put out several more albums over the next decade, including "É" in 2003 and "Vento Sul" in 2006.
Some listeners found their sound unconventional, but they kept working. Their last album mentioned here was "Do Outro Lado do Oceano" in 2011.
