Madame Javali formed in Lisbon in 1996 as a collective of musicians including Nuno Figueiredo on vocals, João Matos on guitar, and Pedro Mendes on bass. They released their debut album in 2000, which featured the song "Caminhoneta Negra (Ou Os Passeios de Bey)." That track became something of a cult favorite in Portugal, with its moody atmosphere and lyrics about a mysterious black van.
Their music often dealt with darker themes, which sometimes drew criticism along with praise. The band put out two more studio albums in 2005 and 2010, and a live recording from Lisbon's Lux venue in 2012. Other songs like "Da Utilidade Pública" and "O Amigo Mais Proibido" continued in that vein of introspective, sometimes unsettling Portuguese rock.
