Maddy Prior

Maddy Prior was born in Blackpool in 1947 and studied music at the Royal Academy of Music. She joined Steeleye Span in 1969, becoming the folk-rock band's lead vocalist during a period that included albums like 'Hark! The Village Wait' and 'All Around My Hat.' Her voice carried traditional English folk songs into arrangements that blended acoustic instruments with electric ones.

She recorded solo albums such as 'Woman in the Wings' and 'Flesh and Blood,' and her work includes songs like 'Autumn: Marigold/Harvest Home' and 'Sheath And Knife.' Prior collaborated with other musicians, appearing on Nick Drake's 'Bryter Layter' and John Renbourn's 'The Lady and the Unicorn.'

Her approach to folk music emphasized traditional elements, which sometimes drew criticism from those favoring more modern adaptations. Through Steeleye Span and her own recordings, she helped sustain interest in English folk material during the latter half of the 20th century.
