Madre

Madre formed in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in the early 2000s, with Flávio Guimarães on vocals, Rodrigo Costa on guitar, and Glauco Mendes on bass. Their sound pulls from hard rock and metal, but with a distinct Brazilian feel that sets them apart from straightforward heavy music. Their debut album 'El Camino' came out in 2005, followed by records like 'Encruzilhada' in 2008 and 'Canção Preta' in 2012.

Songs like 'Encruzilhada' and 'Infância Perdida' show their approach: heavy riffs paired with melodic, often introspective lyrics. They've faced some difficult moments, including the death of drummer Rafael Bittencourt in 2010, after which Pedro Sanchez joined the band. Their lyrics have sometimes drawn criticism for being politically charged, which they've addressed by saying they're just writing about the world as they see it.

They've kept working as a core trio of Guimarães, Costa, and Mendes, putting out albums steadily into the late 2010s with 'A Última Esperança' in 2018. While they've been part of the Brazilian rock scene for two decades now, their music has stayed grounded in that initial blend of heavy guitar work and local rhythm.
