Madryn formed in Cardiff, Wales in 2014 with Joe Hawes on vocals and guitar, Owain Davies on bass, and Luke Ritchie on drums. They put out an EP called "The Madryn EP" the following year, playing local shows while working on their sound.
Their 2017 single "Deja" connected with listeners and gave the band its first real break. The song's straightforward melody and direct lyrics seemed to cut through the noise, landing on playlists and charts in a way their earlier work hadn't.
They've since released two full-length albums, "All That We Are" in 2019 and "The Waves" in 2022. The music pulls from folk and rock, with Hawes's earnest delivery at the center of it.
