Background notes

Archive material and source history

Magenta Harvest came out of London in the 1970s, a time when punk was starting to push melodic rock to the side. They had Chris Meredith on vocals and guitar, Steve Gadd on drums, Gavin Harrison on bass, and Jon Camp on keyboards. Their first album, 'A Familiar Room', came out in 1980. That title track, a slow, sad song about lost love, ended up being one of their best-known pieces.

Their second album, 'The Edge of Time', got some mixed reviews when it came out. Some people thought it sounded too much like they were trying to make a hit record. They kept touring anyway, playing songs like 'Apparition Of Ending' and 'Killing Sign' for fans who liked their sound.
