Background notes

Archive material and source history

Magnet formed in New York City in 1999 with Matthew Caws on vocals and guitar, Ed Harcourt on guitar, Jonathon Loveday on bass, and James Haggerty on drums. They put out their debut EP 'In Love with the World' in 2000, followed by the album 'Don't Be a Stranger' on Sire Records in 2001. That first album didn't catch much commercial fire, but they kept touring and building a following.

Their 2004 album 'Chasing Dreams' had the single 'A Little Happier,' which got them some real attention. The song made it into the top 10 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart and got played on the radio. 'Chasing Dreams' eventually went gold. Other songs from that period, like 'Hold On' and 'Lay lady lay,' show the kind of melodic, introspective rock they were doing.

After 'Chasing Dreams,' they released 'The Herd' in 2007 and parted ways with Sire Records in 2009. The band went quiet for a while, with Caws working on solo material. They got back together in 2017 for the album 'No Sanctuary' and put out the EP 'Water Night' in 2021.
