Editor's note

MAKAMAKA's sparse catalog holds quiet power

Three songs, two photos, and a video suggest a project built on minimal gestures.

If you need a frame, start with 'Polaroid'. It's as good a place as any to hear what this project is about.

The three songs we have, 'Hey U', 'Polaroid', and 'Burning Power', are the entire known output. There's no backstory, no history, just these tracks. That makes each one feel like a deliberate statement, especially a song like 'Burning Power' which carries all the weight of a full catalog.

There isn't a documented story here. The arc is simply the existence of these three named songs. They don't suggest a shift so much as a single, contained moment of creation.

MAKAMAKA is a South Korean boy band that formed in 2019 and debuted with the single "Kidding Me." The group consists of Lee Su-hyeon, Moon Sae-yoon, Kim Yong-seung, and Seo Chan-young. Their name comes from the Hawaiian word "makana," which means "gift."

Their 2021 track "Burning Power" became a breakout hit, with its energetic rhythm finding an audience. They followed it with songs like "Hey U" and "Polaroid." In 2022, they faced plagiarism allegations regarding their single "Blessing," though these were later dismissed.

MAKAMAKA released "Candy Sugar Pop" in 2023. They won the New Artist of the Year award at the Golden Disc Awards in 2022.
