Malaria formed in Birmingham, England in 1979 with Steve Allen on vocals, Matthew Bower and Martin Bramah on guitars, and Steve Monti on drums. In 1981 they released their debut album 'Malaria!' which received critical attention. The record's mix of aggression and atmospheric textures drew comparisons to Joy Division, though Malaria maintained their own distinct voice. Tracks like 'Eifersucht' and 'Geld' showcased their approach to lyrics that dealt with alienation and darker themes.
Steve Monti left in 1982 and was replaced by Paul Ferguson on drums. The band's second album 'From Beyond' came out in 1983 but didn't find the same commercial footing as their debut. Bramah and Bower departed the following year, though Malaria continued recording through the 1980s with albums like 'How Much Longer' in 1985.
They went on hiatus in the 1990s but have reunited occasionally for performances. Their catalog includes songs like 'Geh Duschen' and 'How do you Like my new Dog' that remain part of their post-punk discography.
