Malifoo formed in 2003 around Malian singer-songwriter Cheick Tidiane Seck and French guitarist Jean-Philippe Rykiel. Their debut album 'Afriki' came out in 2005, mixing traditional Malian melodies with modern jazz. The band's 2008 album 'So Tell Me' reached the top of the Billboard World Music charts.
Seck's lyrics often touch on social and political themes like poverty and inequality, which has drawn both support and criticism over time. The group's core lineup includes Seck on vocals and guitar, Rykiel on guitar, Laurent Griffaut on drums, and Vincent Taurelle on bass.
They've worked with other musicians including Ibrahim Maalouf, Tony Allen, and Habib Koité. Songs like 'Together' and 'Heart Stops Beating' show their blend of West African rhythms and contemporary arrangements.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
