Zaza Mama formed in Barcelona in the late 1990s when vocalist Alba Sánchez Alcázar started working with guitarist Joan Miquel Rodríguez. Their self-titled debut album came out in 2001, anchored by the song 'Acertijos A Las 9,' which became their most recognizable track with its cryptic lyrics and mix of pop and rock elements.
They followed up with 'Las Cosas Mal Ditas' in 2005, an album that stirred some debate with its social commentary. The band's lineup also included bassist Juan Diego Prada and drummer José Manuel Gascón during this period. They put out two more studio albums, '091' in 2009 and a live recording in 2013.
Songs like 'Een Vriend, Ver Weg Van Mij' and 'Historia De Un Militante' show their range across different moods and subjects. Their music never settled into one clear category, pulling from folk and electronica at times while keeping Alba's distinctive vocals at the center.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
