Mamelungos de Recife formed in 1995 in Recife, Brazil, taking their name from the traditional mamulengo puppet theater of the region. Their early work included the self-titled album from 1998 and 'A Peleja do Caboclinho' in 2001. The group's sound draws from Afro-Brazilian rhythms and often carries a social message, which has sometimes drawn criticism alongside support.
Their 2005 album 'Ainda Tô Achando' gave them one of their best-known songs, a track that became something of an anthem in certain communities. Other songs like 'De Galho Em Galho' and 'Fanfarra Frevo' show their range within regional styles. They've released several albums since, including 'O Quilombo do Futuro' in 2010 and 'A Voz da Resistência' in 2018.
The core lineup has included founders Paulo Vanderlei on vocals and percussion, Edgard Oliveira on guitar and vocals, and Anderson Mendes on percussion.
