Mamerto Martínez was born in 1911 in San Marcos, Guatemala. He started playing guitar early, drawing from the marimba and other local traditions. In the 1930s, he formed Mamerto Martínez y su Conjunto, a band that found an audience in Guatemala and neighboring countries.
His song 'En El Silvo Apacible' came out in 1940 and became his best-known work. The band toured Latin America and Europe in the following years. Martínez kept recording through the 1940s and 1950s, with songs like 'Corrido de Alfredo Zurita' and 'El Quetzal' appearing in that period.
He continued to perform and record despite this. The band included musicians like Alfonso Velázquez on guitar and Ernesto Martínez on marimba.
