Mamonas Assassinas formed in 1990 in Guarulhos, a suburb of São Paulo. The band had five members: Dinho on vocals, Bento Hinoto on drums, Samuel Reoli on bass, Sérgio Reoli on guitar, and Júlio Rasec on keyboard. They played a mix of rock and salsa that caught on in local clubs.
Their debut album came out in 1995 and included the hit 'É Triste Mas Eu Não Me Queixo.' The lyrics sometimes made fun of Brazilian society and politics, which drew some criticism, but the humor and catchy music made them popular across the country.
On March 2, 1996, the band's plane crashed while traveling to a concert in Brasilia. All five members and four crew died. The accident shocked Brazil, and their music kept playing on radios and in homes afterward.
