Mamotte Shugogetten formed in the late 2000s with Aya Hirano on vocals, Keita Kurokawa on guitar, Masaru Yokoyama on bass, and Yuji Moriya on drums. Their 2009 single 'I Just Feel so Love Again ~soba ni iru dake de~' became the opening theme for the anime series 'Hayate the Combat Butler' and reached the top of the Oricon charts.
Hirano's voice gave their music a particular quality, with songs like 'Shining Moon' and 'Soba Ni Iru Dake de' built around acoustic arrangements and lyrics that often dealt with love and longing. In 2010, Hirano was diagnosed with Graves' disease, which affected her vocal cords and led to surgery and a temporary hiatus from singing.
Some listeners found their material too melancholic, but the band maintained a following. They released other tracks including 'Konnichiwa' and 'Saa' before activity slowed.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
