Editor's note

Barış Manço, Turkey's folk-rock storyteller and TV host.

He blended Turkish folk rhythms with Western pop, writing songs about peace that still resonate today.

For a quick sense of his style, try 'Bahçede Hanımeli' or 'Ayrılık', they're both classic Manço, melodic and grounded.

Manço's music gave Turkish pop a distinct voice, mixing local sounds with catchy rock arrangements. A song like 'Bahçede Hanımeli' shows his knack for wrapping thoughtful themes in melodies that stick. His work as a TV personality and founder of an education foundation made his message about social harmony part of daily life.

He started as a drummer in bands before his debut single 'Dağlar Dağlar' in 1967. Over the years, he released albums like 'Barış Manço' in 1969 and 'Yeni Bir Gün' in 1989, often with guitarist Mazhar Alanson and bassist Fuat Güner in his band.
