Background notes

Archive material and source history

Mané Aniva was a Brazilian band formed in Rio de Janeiro by Cláudio Jorge, Paulo Fortuna, and Caetano Kelsen. They worked with samba, bossa nova, and jazz, releasing their first album in 1972.

Their song "Vai Dormir" became their best-known track, appearing on a 1975 album of the same name. They put out several records in the mid-1970s, including "Samba Jazz" in 1973 and "Swing" in 1976.

Some listeners found their mix of styles unusual at first, but the group kept playing what interested them. They didn't become a household name, but they left behind a handful of albums that show what they were trying to do.
