Mani formed in the 1990s at the Igreja Batista da Lagoinha in Belo Horizonte, with Marcos Almeida as the frontman. The original lineup included guitarists Kadu Andrade and Fernanda Brum, bassist César Lemos, and drummer Anibal Rocha.
Their 2000 album "Em Nome do Senhor" gave the band its breakthrough. The title track became a national hit in Brazilian Christian circles. Other songs from that period include "Equensu Ocha" and "We Are The Bass."
Almeida was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, which forced the cancellation of a tour. In 2005, the band faced criticism from some evangelicals after performing at a Catholic Church event. Brum left in 2004 to pursue solo work, and Rocha retired in 2015. Almeida, Andrade, and Lemos continued as the core members.
