Background notes

Archive material and source history

Manny Oquendo was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1931 and moved to New York City in the 1950s. He formed his band Conjunto Libre there, working as a percussionist in the city's Latin jazz scene.

The group's sound mixed Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz and other styles, which sometimes drew criticism from traditionalists. They recorded songs like "Vengo Sabroso" and worked with musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, and Eddie Palmieri.

Oquendo led the ensemble through several album releases before his death in 2009. The recordings remain part of the Latin jazz catalog from that period.
